Requirements Management at NASA

چکیده

Requirements have always been acknowledged as the backbone of any system. However, in many past development efforts, requirements were paid little heed. At NASA, in recent years, the hue and cry for project development has been “Faster, Better, Cheaper and Safer”. This has impacted the way we develop software; it has increased the risks to quality, safety and reliability. At NASA, the Software Assurance Technology Center (SATC) is working with projects to emphasize the criticality of requirements throughout development, not just in the initial phases. This emphasis is on requirements relationship to all aspects of quality, including reliability and safety. In this presentation, we will look at some of these relationships through the eyes of quality. About the Speaker Dr. Linda H. Rosenberg is the Chief Scientist for Software Assurance at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. She is also acting Division Chief of the Software Assurance Technology Office in the Office of Systems Safety and Mission Assurance. In these roles, she is responsible for identifying and developing new techniques and technologies to continually improve the quality and safety of NASA’s mission software. Dr. Rosenberg is recognized internationally as an expert in the areas of software reliability, requirements and metrics and sits on the IEEE program committees for these fields. Prior to coming to NASA, Dr. Rosenberg was a College professor. Dr. Rosenberg holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science, a Masters of Engineering Science, and a Bachelors in Mathematics. Consistent Credibility Criteria: Why have them, what are they, and how do you measure them? (abstract)

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has endeavored to develop a consistent method of assuring the credibility of simulation results. Requirements like "accurate enough for a particular use" present problems. How do you measure accuracy? What has to be accurate? What factors are measured? How do you quantify “enough for the particular use?” Which functions are measured? When...

Development and Validation of a Pilot Activity Load Index (PALI) based on NASA-TLX template

Abstract Introduction: Workload can be defined as the hypothetical construct that represents the cost incurred by a human operator to achieve a particular level of performance. Each job has specific needs and demands. The better measurement tool assessing that estimate the workload, it’s need to identify the requirements of a task, the circumstances under which it is performed, and the skills,...

Business Intelligence in Large Organizations: Integrating Which Data?

This paper describes a novel approach to business intelligence and program management for large technology enterprises like the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Two key distinctions of the approach are that 1) standard business documents are the user interface, and 2) a “schema-less” XML database enables flexible integration of technology information for use by both hu...

Webtanks for knowledge management: web-based collaborative learning environment

My assignment at NASA Ames Research Center is to develop a program plan for a think tank, BEACON (Bio-Evolutionary Advanced Concepts for NASA), that brings together cross-disciplinary teams to conceive the next generation of NASA technology and scientific research across IT and Fundamental Biology. A “webtank” (think tank on the web) is being developed to support think tank activities. Prior to...

Technology Transfer Issues for Formal Methods of Software Specification

Accurate and complete requirements specifications are crucial for the design and implementation of high-quality software. Unfortunately, the articulation and verification of software system requirements remains one of the most difficult and error-prone tasks in the software development lifecycle. The use of formal methods, based on mathematical logic and discrete mathematics, holds promise for ...
